如何通过英文原著学习地道的英语表达呢？

今天的句子来自乔治·布鲁克斯的小说节选， A Gift of Dreams 《梦寐以求的礼物》。

原文: I had won $300 at poker that ordinarily would have burned a hole in my pocket, but I couldn't shake an overwhelming sadness.

我玩扑克游戏，赢了300美元。通常，钱烧口袋漏，一有就不留。可我当时极为忧愁烦闷，怎么也无法摆脱那种恶劣的心境。

1.  burn a hole in one's pocket  钱烧口袋漏，钱在口袋里留不住
这是一个十分地道的，形象的，并且也符合中国文化的短语。那么我们该如何运用这一地道的表达呢?

2.  overwhelming 压倒性的，无法抗拒的
这个单词在写作的时候其实非常好用，overwhelming是一个形容词，主要用于名词前，起修饰作用。

如: 绝大多数参与者都赞同这个计划。
The overwhelming majority of those present were in favor of the plan.

再如: 得知考试失败这个消息，他十分伤心。
Being informed of failing the examination, he was overwhelming depressed.

3.  shake 动摇；使震惊；摆脱 

shake的用法比较多，我们常见到的意思为“动摇，摇动”，如“握手”是 shake a hand, “摇头”是shake one’s head。 但在这个句子shake 是摆脱的意思，摆脱不好的情绪和人等。下面我们一起来详细了解shake的各种意思吧~

a. 使震惊 shake = shock sb.

如：听到她的死讯，他大为震惊。
He was badly shaken by the news of her death.

b. 动摇(信心)

如：这件事情必定动摇了他对这一行业的信心。
The accident is bound to shake his confidence of the industry.

c. 去除，摆脱
